Digital Archiving in PDF

Issues of preservation have become increasingly important, especially to individuals or organizations that have volumes of material that is either forgotten or poorly kept and organized. Disaster recovery has become more of a buzz word following the spate of disastrous hurricanes in 2005, but methodical archiving has always been a worthwhile endeavor for any prolific individual or organization that desires to have access to the material, both for the past AND the present.

Document imaging falls in to 2 categories: volume scanning or imaging on demand. There are a myriad of service bureaus that do volume imaging, but little or no care is taken with individual documents such as old musical scores. Typically, service bureaus have good general knowledge of scanning based upon the size of the document, but not its integrity. This is where Object Design can help, as we know the context of the work, and the proper format for making sure the documents are properly preserved. For items such as musical scores, we often use the PDF format, and create links from the score to the individual parts. Using the Adobe Acrobat software, you can also annotate the work--for example, having the composer, publisher or conductor add their comments to the score.

Whether it’s photographs, musical scores, documents, or any other types of items you need scanned and digitized, we’ll work with you to get your electronic archiving project completed cost-effectively and expeditiously. We take great care into making sure the material is properly scanned and formatted, ensuring that the materials can be viewed and printed for many generations.
